Quilotoa
A Breathtaking Journey to Ecuador’s Emerald Jewel!
Embark on a scenic adventure to one of the most stunning volcanic craters in the world! Our journey begins south of Quito, heading toward Latacunga, before taking a picturesque drive west through the Andean highlands, where breathtaking landscapes and authentic cultural encounters await.
Along the way, we pass through small Indigenous villages and, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, explore the Pujilí Market, a vibrant hub of local traditions. We’ll also visit a local Indigenous family, offering a rare glimpse into their simple yet fascinating way of life. Another cultural gem is the Tigua community, famous for its Naïf paintings on sheepskin, depicting Andean life with vibrant colors and intricate details. On Saturdays, we can also stop at the Zumbahua Lama Market, where llamas and other animals are traded in a centuries-old tradition.
Finally, we reach Quilotoa village (3,854 meters / 12,644 ft), home to the breathtaking Quilotoa Crater, an active volcanic crater with a mesmerizing emerald-green lake at its heart. Here, you’ll have the option to hike down into the crater, soaking in the stunning natural beauty as you descend. The return hike is a true challenge, but for a more relaxed experience, you can ride a horse back up and enjoy the view. After a well-deserved lunch, we’ll either return to Quito or continue to your next destination.
